First Medical Responder Program (FMR)

Program Overview

FMR Program

The FMR program is offered in a number of delivery methods, with the most popular being over a period of 15 weeks. The program runs one weeknight a week for the 15 weeks, as well as two or three weekend sessions for practical application of the new skills. The course includes all required texts and student manuals as well as a CPR update and includes skills such as bandaging and splinting, airway management, automated external defibrillation and spinal immobilization. The FMR Program from Professional Medical Associates also includes a driving program using the high-fidelity driving simulator.

The program is designed as an entry level program to provide initial medical response and includes information on documentation, ambulance driving and roles and responsibilities, and various equipment utilized to treat ill and injured patients, though graduates cannot be employed as EMRs. Graduates of the Professional Medical Associates' FMR may choose to continue to the EMR Program and on completion of the expanded EMR program, are eligible to complete the Provincial Registration Examination and become registered as Emergency Medical Responders with the Alberta College of Paramedics and eligible to work in the province of Alberta.
